According to the International Sleep Products Association, it is estimated that approximately 50,000 mattresses end up in the dumpster every single day in the United States. The problem began when mattresses involved centuries of decomposing after burying, primarily due to the materials used. Mattresses can be made of both inorganic and organic materials, as they gradually break down when buried. Unlike a regular composing situation where the organic material naturally breaks down, non-biodegradable trash in the landfills releases toxic gases during decomposition. As the materials decompose, the environment absorbs the resulting chemicals. Examples include flame retardants, dyes, fungicides, bleaches and petrochemicals. Though landfil
